THE FOUR GENTLEMEN SUMI-E JAPANESE PAINTING WITH STEPHEN CARROLL 2nd MARCH 10AM TIL 4PM

This workshop is for beginners, those wanting to refresh their practice of sumi-e or to progress their practice further.

Sumi-e, ink painting, is the traditional art form of Japan. In this workshop we will learn and practice the traditional method of brush stokes, posture and mindfulness necessary to produce a sumi-e painting. We shall revise and move through the “Four Gentlemen" (bamboo, orchid, plum and chrysanthemum), which give us our basic, necessary brush strokes and onto other traditionally Asian subjects.

Each person will move at their own guided pace as it is not the finished painting that is important but an understanding of technique, water and ink control, type of paper and the essential mindfulness necessary to produce, not the perfect representation of an object but the essence of it. Being able to understand the essence of a subject is vital to sumi-e.

“In sumi-e are the eloquent descriptions of the complex and infinite universe, while the blank space is equally eloquent with its silence of nothingness.” Motoi Oi in Brush Stokes of Sumi-e Painting 1963.

An environmental advocate, materials are sourced from a myriad of places, all of which are reclaimed, repurposed and saved from landfill. Workshop materials include: A wide variety of ready to stitch core strips with the option to create your own during the class, threads of varying colours, needles, embellishments, buttons and other decorative pieces.

Including a delicious lunch, by the end of the day, you’ll leave with a uniquely stitched vessel, reduced your impact on the environment, explored your creativity in new and meditative ways, and shared in the joy of creating something completely individual.  Come along, unwind and discover something new from old.

Artist Bio:
Louise Meuwissen works with textiles and found materials to make intricate embroidered paintings, sculptures and wearable art – transforming components of costume and dress into objects imbued with uncanny psychological and spiritual resonances. Her work employs DIY methodologies and craft techniques to blend post-consumer materials – high and low – with time, care, and attention. Meuwissen’s practice considers the complex individual and collective relationships we form with objects, and how they come to embody meaning and value; carry energetic, symbolic, and intellectual charge; and become anchors for thoughts and beliefs.  Her work is informed by adornment and decoration, and the fluxing of fashion –  underpinned by discarding and collecting, the interplay between labour and luxury, and environmental sustainability. Her practice considers the intangible, unknowable, and mortality, informed by eclectic research investigating devotion, the Sublime, hoarding, storytelling and mythology.

Louise Meuwissen specialises in developing and delivering craft-based workshops that celebrate our innate creativity, wholeheartedly believing that making is for everyone. Louise has worked with people of all ages and abilities, in small and large groups, and facilitates spaces that are fun, encouraging, warm and relaxed. She has delivered workshops with institutions such as The NGV, SIGNAL Arts, The Royal Melbourne Show, Craft Victoria, Wangaratta Art Gallery, Kingston Arts, Bunjil Place, and Bundoora Homestead Art Centre.

Art With Mother Nature: Botanical Wall Hanging Workshop

Immerse yourself  in a day of relaxation where you create hand in hand with Mother Nature.  This slow and mindful workshop will encourage you to be present in the moment, enjoy the process of making and inspire you to expand your creativity while using natural materials.

Guided by Lou, award winning artist, weaver and maker, this day of joyful creativity is designed for anyone looking to delve into the calm of making and weaving, from absolute beginners to more experienced makers. With as little or as much instruction as you prefer, and as the materials combine with your creative style, Lou will support you through the steps to make a beautiful, organically created wall art.

An environmental advocate, Lou sources her leaves, twigs, seed pods, driftwood, feathers, branches and grasses sustainably from the Sapphire Coast of NSW where she resides and works. Using only natural plant fibres, to bind and tie your materials, your unique artwork will be glue and plastic free, which in time, may be safely and sustainably composted.

Including a delicious lunch, by the end of the day, you’ll leave with a stunning wall hanging ready to display in your home — one that carries the beauty of Mother Nature and the joy of having made it yourself. Come along, unwind, and create something truly unique from nature’s gifts.

Contemporary Crochet with Kate in the Nest - 7th September - 11 til 5pm

Contemporary Crochet with Kate in the Nest

Kate learned to crochet as a child, and firmly believes it is an easy pathway to the release of the creative spirit, whatever our age.  It’s versatility, and limited number of basic stitches means that crochet is accessible, adaptable and contemporary.

This workshop is about looking at crochet through a sustainable lens, using reclaimed fabrics as the foundational yarn. We will use a large crochet hook to create in a fast and fun way.

In the morning session we will explore the basic design of a pouch and vessel, revising the simple stitches required before starting the creation of a product. As the day unfolds, we will also look at how crochet can be used to make embellishments.
