Miniature Cross-stitch portraits with Sharon Peoples 2 Day Workshop 26 & 27 Feb (10 til 4pm)

Learn how to stitch a portrait that fits into a small container, such as a jewellery case, small box or tin. You'll stitch your miniature portrait onto a dark cloth.

This will allow you to explore what goes into making a great portrait.

Students will learn how to transfer the design from a small black and white photograph to fabric. By carefully examining the direction of light, you'll be able to enliven the stitched work, making it dramatic, yet intimate.

Students will be shown how to size the portrait design to fit a container. Then move on to how to transfer the pattern onto linen, cotton, or a recycled woven fabric. The stitch you will start with is random cross-stitch, using stranded embroidery cotton. When the work is finished, students will mount the stitched piece into the chosen container.

Required materials

A small portrait photograph approximately 10 x 10 cm. We will be working from a black and white image to start with. If you have a coloured image as well, this is also often useful to getting the portrait just right.

A small container for the portrait to fit into. I use old jewellery boxes, chocolate boxes and even old wooden cheese boxes are great.

Scissors, needles (if you have them) and a hoop if you use one.

Lunch and morning tea will be served on both days. Let us know in the booking comments if you are vegetarian or gluten free.
